This etching depicts the scene from Numbers 22:22 in which the Angel of the Lord is dispatched to Bileam (Balaam), his donkey and the princes of Moab to prevent the party from continuing on their journey. However, only the donkey is able to see so and halts due to the angels presence. Balaam begins to beat the donkey for refusing to move. The animal is granted the power of speech and complains to Balaam about its punishment, present and historical. At which point the angel reveals itself to the travellers and tells Balaam that the donkeys refusal to continue saved all from an ordained slaying.
